As a founder of the firm, Larry has provided leadership in all aspects of the firm’s practice from its inception. He continues active involvement as principal-in-charge and project architect for a variety of private and public agency projects. Larry is often directly responsible for facility programming, land and site planning, and assisting clients with public outreach and the regulatory agency approval process for projects. He particularly enjoys developing an understanding of the relationship between the site and its surroundings with the built environment and how best to meld these for functional, site sensitive, and aesthetic design solutions.
While attending the University of Colorado, Larry was a member of the alpine ski club team, until he realized the training and racing demands of competition were at odds with successful completion of the architectural school curriculum. As a result, Larry has pursued his passions for the mountain environment and architecture with extensive travels in the European Alps and mountain resorts in the western U.S. and Canada for the study of development strategy, planning, and building design.
Larry has authored design review guidelines, master plans, and specific plans. He is currently the professional advisor to the Schaffer’s Mill Architectural Review Committee, and he has previously served on the design review committees of several homeowners’ associations. He has served on the
Town of Mammoth Lakes Community Development Department’s Advisory Design Panel for the past twelve years. Larry’s community involvement has included participation on boards and committees, as well as six years as the AYSO regional chief coach and coached all age groups including high school varsity soccer.
Larry became fascinated with design and construction as a young boy while observing a carpenter craftsman designing a gazebo at the home of family friends, then going outside to construct what he had just drawn. Larry was hooked on the idea of being able to transform creative ideas about structures, places, and spaces into drawings of those ideas, then building the physical manifestation of that idea from the drawings. Larry’s father, although not an architect, expressed an interest in and appreciation for architecture, and Larry grew up surrounded with books about Frank Lloyd Wright and issues of Sunset Magazine. Larry’s parents were avid outdoor enthusiasts, particularly snow and water skiers, and Larry caught their passion for enjoying outdoor recreation and nature. He feels blessed to be able to practice architecture and live and recreate in one of the special places of natural beauty in the world.
When not in the office, Larry enjoys skiing, hiking, mountain biking, and bare-boat sailing in the Caribbean.
