Schaffer’s Mill, a 475-acre, 400-homesite gated community and private club located just east of Truckee, was chosen by HGTV as the location for the 2014 HGTV Dream Home this past summer. HGTV built and decorated the beautiful 3,200-plus square foot cabin at Schaffer’s Mill. The Dream Home was revealed on HGTV on Wednesday, January 1st during a one-hour show. The network will then give the home away to one lucky winner through its HGTV Dream Home 2014 Giveaway.
“I recently toured the Dream Home and it is amazing,” said John Marlin, Managing Partner for Schaffer’s Mill. “If you have an opportunity to tour the home, I highly recommend it. Not only, is the architecture and decorating incredible, but the proceeds from tour ticket sales benefit a local Tahoe/Truckee charity -- the Tahoe Forest Health System Foundation.”

The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe to Open New Slope-side Restaurant This Winter
The Backyard Bar & BBQ Will Offer Casual On-Mountain Outdoor Dining
NORTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Sept. 23, 2013 – Construction of a new al fresco dining establishment slated to open early this winter recently began at The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe. Located on the back patio of the resort, The Backyard Bar & BBQ will offer guests a new year-round casual dining experience with ski-in/ski-out outdoor dining in the winter and poolside convenience during the summer.
“The Backyard Bar & BBQ will offer resort guests the opportunity to enjoy lunch and après ski dining and drinks mere steps from the slopes,” said Joseph Mattioli, general manager of The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe. “Along with other recent upgrades including the expansion of the patio and additional outdoor seating, our guests will find The Backyard to be much more animated, and a welcoming place to relax and enjoy the mountain setting.”
The restaurant will feature a “blues, brews and BBQ” concept, with the menu offering traditional barbeque favorites including St. Louis smoked ribs, brisket and pulled pork platters cooked with an on-site smoker, a selection of house made BBQ sauces, wood-fired oven baked pizzas, traditional burgers and bratwurst along with home-style side dishes and desserts. A seasonal beverage program with saloon-inspired cocktails and local craft beer selections will also be offered. During the winter season, the restaurant will offer après ski food and beverage specials to guests stepping off the adjacent slopes, and casual outdoor family cookouts during the summer months.
Designed by Lake Tahoe-based Ward-Young Architecture & Planning, The Backyard Bar & BBQ will offer walk-up counter food service and a full bar. The building’s design will complement the architecture of the resort itself, and is scheduled to open mid-December 2013.

Ward-Young volunteers were successful in making enough chili to feed 150 people this past Sunday evening at the Stone Soup event in downtown Truckee. Two types of chili were served, a spicy vegetable and a beef and three bean chili. The attached image shows Anne-Flore stirring up her spicy vegetable chili. Thanks to all who attended and volunteered at the event!
